According to a legend recorded by the chronicler Václav Hájek of Libočany, the thermal springs were discovered in the year 762. A swineherd tended his herd of pigs every day, among them a pig that limped and often lagged behind. At first, the herdsman did not consider this unusual, but over time he noticed something strange – the animal stopped limping and appeared healthier and more energetic than the others.
Curiosity led the herdsman to follow the pig one day. It guided him to a place where a hot spring gushed from the ground and where the pig happily wallowed in the warm mud. After returning home, the herdsman immediately told everything to the local nobleman Kolostůj. It was at this very place that Kolostůj founded a settlement, which later developed into the town of Teplice.
