The name Šanov originates from the German die schöne Au, meaning “beautiful meadow” or “river meadow” – a place surrounded by water. Already in the 19th century, Šanov gained importance within the spa area: in 1865 it was promoted to a First-Class Spa Resort, and in 1884 it received imperial city status.
A historically significant step came in 1895, when residents decided in a referendum to join Šanov with Teplice. This created the twin town of Teplice-Šanov (Teplitz-Schönau). For comparison, the district of Trnovany became part of Teplice only after the Second World War. Today, Šanov offers visitors a calm spa atmosphere, beautiful parks and historic spa houses that seamlessly connect with the lively centre of Teplice.
