The Baroque Church of St. John the Baptist on Castle Square in Teplice is dedicated to the patron saint of healing springs. The deanery church was built in 1594 on the foundations of an older structure and was rebuilt into its present Baroque form in 1703.
Its most distinctive feature is the tower, which was reduced in height in the mid-17th century and today serves as a popular observation point offering views of the city centre.
Inside the tower, visitors can find an exhibition dedicated to significant architectural landmarks, as well as a room where, according to legend, a watchman slept through a devastating fire that once ravaged the town.
A cemetery originally surrounded the church but was later removed; preserved gravestones still recall its history today. Beneath the church, in the northern side aisle, lies the burial vault of the Clary-Aldringen family.
