Skating Club

In the second half of the 19th century, the first skating club in Teplice was established under the name “Teplitzer Eisclub.” The club was based on the Lower Castle Pond in the Castle Garden, which became a centre of winter entertainment and sports activities.

The club building was equipped with heated changing rooms and a buffet, providing visitors with comfort even on cold winter days. In the winter months, when the pond’s ice was still solid, a band played on a small artificial island in the centre of the pond, enhancing the experience for the skaters. The club operated only during winter — in summer, the clubhouse served as a boathouse, making the pond a recreational space all year round.

Only limited information has survived regarding the club’s demise. After the Second World War, the club building was demolished, and no physical evidence remains at its former site. Nevertheless, the Teplitzer Eisclub remains a symbol of the beginnings of organized winter sport in Teplice.
