One of the most remarkable episodes in the history of the Teplice spa is connected with the devastating Lisbon earthquake of 1 November 1755. Although the epicentre was hundreds of kilometres away, its consequences surprisingly reached as far as northern Bohemia.
Shortly after the strong tremors, the thermal springs in Teplice suddenly weakened, and in some places even disappeared completely, especially the main spring Pravřídlo. This unexpected situation lasted for approximately two weeks before the water returned and the springs began flowing again.
The event caused considerable public attention and became clear evidence of how interconnected geological processes on Earth are, even across great distances. At the same time, it served as a reminder of the fragility of the natural resources on which the existence of the spa depends – a gift that can never be taken for granted.
