Caspar David Friedrich

Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840)
Painter of Silence and Mist

This German artist is regarded as one of the most important landscape painters of Romanticism. His works are not mere depictions of nature, but expressions of mood, silence, and melancholy. Teplice and its rolling surroundings deeply enchanted Caspar David Friedrich. He was especially fascinated by nearby Mount Milešovka, which he considered to offer the most beautiful view in the world and depicted countless times in sketches. This landscape became the foundation for masterpieces now displayed in major galleries in Berlin, Dresden, and the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg.

His stay in 1835, however, was not only about art, but survival. He came to the spa for treatment after suffering a severe stroke. To afford the costly stay, he was supported by Tsar Nicholas I, who purchased several of his paintings.
