Church of St Elizabeth of Thuringia

Church of St Elizabeth
of Thuringia (also of Hungary)

A Catholic church was built in the spirit of Romantic historicism at the edge of the park in Šanov. An edifice taking the form of a Neo-Gothic brick hall triple nave with a prismatic tower by the side of the presbytery was erected there during the period of 1864–1877 based on the plan of Vienna architect Heinrich Ferstel (1828-1883). The church is dedicated to St Elizabeth, a Hungarian princess, who married the ruler of Thuringia in 1221, from where the founder of the Benedictine convent in Teplice, the Bohemian Queen Judith of Thuringia, hailed as well.
